The agent was investigating “illegal activity” when he encountered a group of migrants in Rio Bravo near Laredo, CBP said.
A Customs and Border Protection agent shot and killed an undocumented immigrant in south Texas Wednesday, the agency said.
The agent was investigating “illegal activity” when he encountered a group of migrants in Rio Bravo near Laredo at 12:22 p.m., CBP said.
He tried to take the migrants into custody, but the group started attacking him with “blunt objects,” prompting the agent to fire his service weapon, which struck one person, the agency said.
The group fled the area before emergency responders arrived to perform first aid on the victim, according to CBP.
A law enforcement source told CNN the victim was a woman.
Marta Martinez, who lives in Laredo, recorded the aftermath of the deadly encounter and posted it to Facebook on Wednesday.
“Why did you shoot the girl? You killed her,” she shouted at an agent in the video. “He killed the girl. She’s over there. She’s dead.”
Border patrol agents eventually arrested three other migrants. The FBI and the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
