Trump moves ahead with Chinese trade tariffs, threatening to reignite tensions

T he US will release a list of Chinese goods that will be subject to a new 25pc tariff in the next couple of weeks, heightening tensions between the world’s two largest economies just over a week after the Trump administration said the trade war had been put « on hold ».
The White House said China’s industrial policies continued to be damaging to businesses both in the US and around the world, and claimed that this year alone it had found « dumping or unfair subsidies on 13 different products ».
It said the final list of covered imports, worth around $50bn (£38bn), will be published on June 15, with the 25pc tariff imposed shortly after.
The US will also be implementing « specific investment restrictions and enhanced export controls for Chinese persons and entities related to the acquisition of industrially significant technology », a list of which will be announced by June 30.
Alongside this, it said it will continue to pursue litigation at the World Trade Organisation against China’s « discriminatory technology licensing requirements ».
