According to officials with the State Highway Patrol, two cars crashed around 12:18 p.m. on U. S. Highway 117 near Old Smith Chapel Road, just south of Mount Olive.
A 2007 Chevy Impala operated by Shirley King Monk, 69, of Clinton, was traveling northbound in the outside lane of U. S. 117 when it was struck from behind by a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser operated by Ashley Paige Marriner, 19, of Mount Olive.
After impact, Monk’s car left the roadway and stopped on the right shoulder while Marriner’s car overturned and came to a final rest on its side in the roadway.
Marriner was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Monk was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical workers.
