WARSAW—The head of Poland’s top court defied a controversial judicial overhaul that forced her removal, showing up for work Wednesday surrounded by protesters after a decision that has put the nationalist government on a confrontation course with the European Union.
The new law retired more than a third of the Supreme Court’s 82 judges, a move widely seen as an attempt by the ruling Law and Justice party to take control over the judiciary. Thousands of Poles took to the streets Tuesday night in noisy protest, chanting, holding candles and singing.
