“The Mi A2 is reportedly set to launch alongside the A2 Lite on July 24th”
Xiaomi has recently announced that it will be hosting a global product launch on July 24th in Spain. Given the number of leaks and rumours in the recent past, the speculations are rife that the Mi A2 will be unveiled on the said date. Considering that Mi 5X was launched as the Mi A1 ( review) around the world, it’s widely expected that the Xiaomi Mi A2 will be the global variant of the Mi 6X, that was launched earlier this year. However, this year Xiaomi is changing a few things if the rumours are to be believed. If you are wondering what these changes could be, we have got you covered. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Xiaomi Mi A2.
Xiaomi launched the Mi A1 in a single variant of 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. However, it’s being speculated that its successor will come in multiple RAM and storage configurations. There are reports of 32GB and 64GB storage variants with 4GB RAM. That’s not all, the high-end model is rumoured to come with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 was the debut Android One smartphone from the brand and for this reason, it was well received by consumers. It’s safe to assume that the Mi A2 will be an Android One device as well. A recent leak from Slashleaks, showed the alleged official renders of the handset and we can spot the Android One branding clearly. This means that the upcoming smartphone is likely to boot stock Android Oreo out of the box, unlike the Mi 6X which comes with Xiaomi’s proprietary MIUI. We can also expect the Mi A2 to come with the promise of updates to the Android P and Q, whenever they’re released.
Xiaomi Mi A2 is speculated to bring a couple of major upgrades over its predecessor including an 18:9 display and improved dual-camera module on the rear. Rumour has it that the Mi A2 will be equipped with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display. The performance of the smartphone is likely to be driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset backed by Adreno 512 GPU. In the imaging department, the phone will retain shooters from the Redmi Note 5 Pro ( review), i.e. a 12MP + 20MP setup. For selfies, the handset will offer a 20MP camera. Lastly, the device is said to be powered by a 3,000mAh battery.
While there have been a lot of rumours surrounding the Mi A2, the most interesting one has to the arrival of a second variant. As per a recent leak, this year Xiaomi will launch a toned-down variant – the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite alongside the regular model. This A2 Lite is speculated to come with a smaller 5.8-inch display and Snapdragon 625 chipset. Additionally, the camera module on the back might also get a downgrade to 12MP + 5MP snappers. Interestingly, the battery is tipped to more powerful than the regular variant as it’s a 4,000mAh unit. It’s also being speculated that the Lite model could be placed in the same price bracket as the Mi A1, considering the fact that the Mi A2 is rumoured to be more expensive than its predecessor.
That brings us to the expected pricing of the upcoming Android One offering from Xiaomi. A Polish website recently revealed the pricing of both the Mi A2 siblings. According to the leak, the Xiaomi Mi A2 will be priced at around Rs 24,000 for the 32GB model, Rs 26,000 for the 64GB variant and close to Rs 30,000 for the 128GB version. The Mi A2 Lite on the other hand, will likely come with a price tag of Rs 19,000. However, this pricing looks steep, especially when compared to the Mi A1’s sticker price. Earlier reports claimed that the Mi A2 could be priced around Rs 15,000 for the base variant and could go all the way up to Rs 21,000 for the top-specced model, which sounds more feasible.
Xiaomi has already discontinued the first generation Mi A1 in India, we can expect the Mi A2 to be available as soon as it is launched. We will bring you latest updates as and when they emerge, so stay tuned.
