Samsung’s Display subsidiary has announced that it has developed an unbreakable flexible OLED screen panel. The company says that its newly-developed display flaunts an unbreakable substrate with an overlay window securely adhered to it. Notably, the current-gen flexible devices sport a glass-covered window on their screen, which often breaks when severely impacted. Samsung unbreakable OLED display
Samsung’s latest display tech has just been certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), which is an official testing company for OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for the U. S. Department of Labor. As per UL, the brand’s unbreakable display has passed the rigorous real-time durability test, which is based on military standards set by the U. S. Department of Defense.
Samsung mentions that during the test, its unbreakable OLED display was dropped 26 times above the ground from 1.2metres, and was exposed to high (71 degrees) and low (-32 degrees) temperature. And the panel managed to pass these tests with flying colours and continued to function normally with no damage to its front, sides or edges. Interestingly enough, even in a subsequent 1.8metres drop test — which is significantly higher than the military-grade standards — the brand’s latest screen tech operated normally without any sign of damage at all.
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company.
According to the South Korean tech giant, apart from smartphones, the unbreakable OLED display can also be used for other products. Some of these devices include display consoles of automobiles, mobile military products, tablet PCs for e-learning, portable game consoles, and more. However, Samsung hasn’t divulged as to when we can expect products utilising the new display tech.
