Blake Swihart bounced a double into the Red Sox bullpen to score Eduardo Nunez in the 13th inning as the Red Sox beat the Phillies 2-1 on Monday night. David Price allowed one run and struck out five in eight full innings.
The Nationals are reportedly listening to offers for Bryce Harper
The Washington Nationals are gauging interest in All-Star outfielder Bryce Harper ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline, according to multiple reports.
Harper, the 2015 NL MVP, will be a free agent at the end of the season. Washington could conceivably pull off the same feat the Yankees managed two summers ago when they traded Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs, then signed him again in free agency four months later.
According to ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian, the Nationals would have to be “overwhelmed” by a potential offer to deal Harper. Kurkjian reported Washington is looking for a front-line starter as part of a larger package and has spoken to other clubs to assess the market for the 25-year-old.
Harper is hitting .220 with 62 RBIs this season. His 25 home runs are tied for second in the NL, but he’s been worth just 0.4 WAR — well off the pace for his 10.0 mark in 2015. The rest of the Nationals roster hasn’t fared much better. Washington is 5 1/2 games out of first place in the NL East, with Stephen Strasburg on the disabled list and the clubhouse in disarray.
At least one team has already reached out to the Nationals regarding a possible trade for Harper: the Cleveland Indians. MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi reported the sides talked, but noted Washington likely wants multiple pitchers to rebuild a rotation that could see pending free agents depart. The deal is further complicated by the Indians’ willingness to part with either of their top pitching prospects in exchange for a short-term rental.
If the Nationals do decide to become sellers at the deadline, their bounty of trade chips include Harper — plus relievers Kelvin Herrera and Ryan Madson, starter Gio Gonzalez, and infielder Daniel Murphy.

Red Sox acquire second baseman Ian Kinsler from Angels: Boston traded two Triple A relief pitchers, righthander Ty Buttrey and lefthander Williams Jerez, to the Angels for the second baseman late Monday night. Bill Belichick shared thoughts on Braxton Berrios, Trent Brown, other Pats: With Danny Amendola in Miami and Julian Edelman under suspension, there’s an opening for Berrios to step into. Belichick noted the rookie was limited during minicamp and training camp marks the Patriots first lengthy exposure to him.
“So we’ll see how that goes,” Belichick said. ( Boston.com)
