Lenovo today announced some new members of its ThinkPad P-series workstation family. The P72 follows up on last year’s ThinkPad P71, but the P1 is all-new, like an X1 for workstations.
Today, Lenovo announced a refresh of its high-end ThinkPad workstation PC, the P72, but it also announced the P1, which is a sort of ThinkPad X1 for workstations. The company says that it’s the « thinnest, lightest and sleekest » mobile workstation that it’s made, offering both style and performance.
The ThinkPad X1 lineup has long been known as some of the best laptops and convertibles around, but it doesn’t offer anything with a screen larger than 14 inches, dedicated graphics, or a high-power processor. The ThinkPad P1 has a 15.6-inch screen with up to 4K resolution, up to a Core i9 or Xeon processor, and Nvidia Quadro P2000 graphics.
All of that comes in a package that’s just 0.7 inches thin, and weighs in at 3.76 pounds. You can get it with up to 64GB DDR4 RAM, and up to a 4TB NVMe SSD.
« When we set out to create the ThinkPad P1, we knew our challenge was to build a mobile workstation that would carry the legacy of professional power and reliability of our ThinkPad portfolio, but also meet our customer’s need for a thin, light and sleek design, » said Rob Herman, General Manager of Workstations, Lenovo. « Whether you are looking for power, the lightest mobile workstation around or sleek and slim tech-envy, the ThinkPad P1 delivers on all counts, period. »
And then there’s the ThinkPad P72, which is the successor to the P71. We reviewed the P71 last year, and it’s a beast. The P72 is no different, offering hexa-core Intel Core or Xeon processors, up to 128GB DDR4 memory, and up to 6TB storage. Graphics go up to Nvidia Quadro P5200, and the 17.3-inch screen comes in at 4K resolution.
The P72 is pretty heavy though, at 7.5 pounds, and it’s a full inch thick. That’s the price of power though.
Both the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 and P72 will be available later on this month, with the P1 starting at $1,949 and the P72 starting at $1,799.
