It is worth highlighting that more RAM does not simply mean better performance. Anything over 4GB with Android’s current architecture goes relatively unnoticed, but it looks good on a spec sheet. Apple has been able to get away with packing a comparatively low amount of memory in the iPhone’s for years thanks to the software optimization that iOS benefits from, but that now seems about to change.
Apple unveiled the iPhone XS and XS Max at its event in Cupertino last week, and despite the lower-cost iPhone XR retaining the same 3GB of RAM configuration as seen in previous iPhone generations, the two new flagships seem to have gotten a bump to 4GB.
This detail wouldn’t have been obvious from the keynote itself, with the company choosing not to disclose the amount of RAM the device has but instead focus on the new A12 Bionic chipset that the company developed specifically for the new iPhones. Thanks to the iPhone XS and XS Max appearing on Geekbench, some eagle-eyed benchmark readers spotted that the new iPhones have given the devices a boost in RAM.
The iPhone XS Max achieved a benchmark score of 4813 for single-core performance, while multi-core performance saw a score of 10266. In comparison, the iPhone XR had a single-core score of 4754 with a multi-core score hitting 9367. The iPhone XS is yet to appear in a benchmark but will be relatively similar to the iPhone XS Max given the similar specs.
The update in RAM is important as it allows more apps to be held in memory without the need to reload the information. That could mean that you could have more Safari tabs open or not lose your place in an app when multi-tasking. While the iPhone XS and XS Max won’t be challenging any leaderboards when it comes to RAM configuration, it does offer a compelling reason why someone would upgrade from the iPhone X.
