On Monday, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) went full LEEEEEROY JENKINS! in the midst of a fraught 2018 election cycle, releasing a study of her ancestry that found that she might have a tenth-generation Native American ancestor (making her 1/1024th Native American).
On Monday, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) went full LEEEEEROY JENKINS! in the midst of a fraught 2018 election cycle, releasing a study of her ancestry that found that she might have a tenth-generation Native American ancestor (making her 1/1024 th Native American).
This news cycle was, needless to say, quite good for Republicans: a top 2020 contender and progressive darling essentially lit herself on fire in public for no good reason, hoping that the media would cover her self-immolation as a victory. They did. It backfired.
Then President Trump, too, went full LEEEEEROY JENKINS!
Reacting to the news that Stormy Daniels, a woman with whom he once had sex, would be forced to pay his attorney’s fees in a frivolous defamation case against him, Trump took to Twitter to insult Daniels as a member of the cast of Equus:

Now, this is obviously bad stuff. It’s immoral, it’s nasty. It’s also not unexpected from President Trump, particularly in the aftermath of the media’s willingness to hear Stormy Daniels talk about Trump’s Mario Kart penis.
But suffice it to say, Trump’s tweet provided exactly the “hold my fire water” moment Elizabeth Warren was looking for. Instead of a full week of a news cycle focused on Warren’s racial fraud, we’re going to get a recap of Heidi Cruz week/Carly Fiorina week/Mika Brzezinski week/Megyn Kelly week/Alicia Machado week. That’s not the end of the world for Republicans – Trump survived all of those weeks, of course – but it blunts the impact of a terrible news cycle for Democrats.
Mitch Hedberg once stated, “The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I’ll never be as good as a wall.” Whichever party decides to be a wall rather than a firehose will reap the benefit. Right now, it’s two firehoses of punch lines, day after day. We’re all going to end up drowning.
