The NYPD on Saturday ramped up security at houses of worship across the Big Apple in response to the mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.
“The NYPD is deploying heavy weapons teams, including the officers from the Critical Response Command and the Strategic Response Team, to houses of worship across the city,” the department said in a statement.
Patrol cars will also make additional stops at synagogues and other places of worship, police said.
The move comes after a gunman, identified as Robert Bowers, 46, shouted “all Jews must die” as he opened fire in a Pittsburgh synagogue, killing at least eight people, authorities said.
“Currently, there is no nexus to New York. But these steps are being taken until further information is learned about the events in Pittsburgh by the NYPD,” police said in the statement.
Authorities in Israel also condemned the shooting and said they were monitoring the situation closely.
Minister Naftali Bennett, Israel’s Cabinet minister for diaspora affairs, said the nation is “following the news with concern,” and added: “Our hearts go out to the families of those killed and injured. May the memory of the murdered be blessed.”
