The slider design seems to be catching up. After OPPO’s Find X with motorised cameras, Xiaomi has released the Mi Mix 3 with a slider design as well. The new device boasts class-leading specifications along with a design language that stands apart from the others. As far as Xiaomi is concerned, the Mi Mix series has always been about stretching the boundaries. But did the Mi Mix 3 really push the envelope further? Well, to find that out, let’s see how the Mi Mix 3 stacks up with its predecessor, the Mi Mix 2s.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is devoid of any bezels, except for the chin at the bottom for holding the camera sensor. The phone comes with a full ceramic body and an outer frame that’s churned out of aluminium alloy. Its successor however, takes the bezel game to the next level with the slider design and an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 93.4 percent. The slider gives way to the camera and it can also be configured as an actionable shortcut.
As far as display is concerned, the Mi Mix 3 features a 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED panel with a 19:5:9 aspect ratio. Meanwhile, the Mi Mix 2S comes equipped with a comparatively smaller 5.99-inch FHD display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.
Xiaomi has been thoughtful enough to bless the Mi Mix 3 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. On the storage front, users can choose between 128GB and 256GB. Moving on to the most interesting bit, Xiaomi has decided to offer a ‘Palace Museum’ special edition with a 10GB RAM / 256GB storage combo. Adding to the novelties is the 5G support. Yes, the Mi Mix 3’s 5G variant will be launched variant year in Europe.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is no slouch since it’s also powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM. Storage options also go all the way up to 256GB.
The Mi Mix 3 runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 10. The brand has also rolled out the MIUI 10 for Mi Mix 2S and that means both the devices are identical on the software front.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 ships with a dual rear camera setup consisting of two 12-megapixel shooters. The handset also offers a pair of front cameras made up of a 24-megapixel Sony IMX576 snapper and a 2-megapixel sensor. Other camera features on the Mi Mix 3 include AI scene detection, 960fps slow-motion, AI bokeh, AI Studio, and AI background music. The Mi Mix 2S shares the dual rear camera setup with the Mi Mix 3. However, the selfie camera is only a 5-megapixel unit.
Once again, the Mi Mix 3 takes lead with its 3,850mAh battery as opposed to the 3,400mAh cell on the Mi Mix 2S. Both phones do come with wireless charging support however, and the latest offering comes bundled with a wireless charger as well.
It is but obvious that many of us might consider the Mi Mix 3 to be a revolutionary upgrade. If you look closely however, apart from the tempting new design elements, the Xiaomim handset still borrows heavily from its predecessor. Having said that, design-wise, there’s no doubt that the third-gen Mi Mix offering will offer you a fresh whiff of air with the slider and a staggering screen-to-body ratio.
As for the pricing, the Mi Mix 3 starts at 3,299 RMB (~Rs 35,000) for the 6GB + 128GB variant and goes all the way up to 4,999 RMB (~Rs 52,500) for the ‘Palace Museum’ special edition. Unfortunately, the Apple of China hasn’t confirmed if the Mi Mix 3 will be coming to the country anytime soon.
