Linebacker Jerome Baker scored the only touchdown of the game in the Miami Dolphins’ 13-6 win against the New York Jets on Sunday in Miami.
MIAMI, Nov. 4 (UPI) — A sluggish scoring day meant no touchdowns from either offense in the Miami Dolphins ‘ 13-6 win against the New York Jets on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Luckily, Jerome Baker felt like being a touchdown maker.
The rookie linebacker picked off Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold in the fourth quarter and ran down the left flank for a 25-yard touchdown return to seal the victory for Miami. Baker’s score gave the Dolphins a 13-3 advantage that the Jets would not be able to come back from.
« I felt like they did a good job of playing together, » Dolphins coach Adam Gase said. « At all three levels… trying to really compliment each other. That’s what you are looking for. »
The AFC East clash began with five consecutive punts before Darnold tossed the first of his four interceptions on the day. Miami used that turnover to set up a 43-yard Jason Sanders field goal, taking a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
New York and Miami exchanged punting drives once again to start the second quarter, before Sanders hit another field goal to give the Dolphins a 6-0 edge. Jason Myers answered back on the Jets’ next drive with a 48-yard kick to cut the Dolphins’ lead to 6-3 at halftime.
Each team punted twice to begin the third quarter, before Myers missed a 50-yard field goal. Miami punted on the resulting drive, before Baker intercepted Darnold for the game’s lone touchdown.
Myers made a 56-yard field goal on the next drive, but the Dolphins’ defense stepped up down the stretch, intercepting Darnold on each of the Jets’ final two possessions.
Darnold completed 21-of-39 passes for 229 yards in the loss. Brock Osweiler completed 15-of-24 passes for 139 yards, but did not throw a touchdown or an interception for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins battle the Packers at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The Jets host the Buffalo Bills at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N. J.
