Niantic Labs is well-known around the world for having created the massively popular mobile game Pokémon Go, but it was responsible for another, similar title years before. Ingress was Niantic’s first swing at mobile gaming with augmented reality implemented within the very fabric of the game. With Pokémon Go having been significantly improved since its debut, Niantic has been working on retooling its original title with a series of new, advanced AR tools. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s now available on both iOS and Android as Ingress Prime.
The free game is a remake of the original from top to bottom, and it’s a decidedly more impressive vision of the game that Niantic broke onto the scene with. If you already have the game and an account, you can simply log into the new version after updating the old app. All of your account information such as names, badges, progress, and other important data will transfer over from Ingress to Ingress Prime.
Though Niantic had been working on transforming Pokémon Go with new and more realistic takes on augmented reality since it debuted in 2016, it hadn’t yet had a chance to apply these systems to its original smash hit, but now that it has, the modern Ingress Prime is a modernized version of the game that folks fell in love with when it first debuted. You’re tasked with choosing one of two sides in a conflict the involves the entire world. Each group is looking to secure control of an energy that flows freely from portals dotting the globe. The more portals your side captures, the better you’re doing – just like the Gyms players can control in Pokémon Go. It’s a worldwide battle for supremacy that plays out in the real world.
Ingress Prime looks, feels, and plays much better than the original, which is to be expected since so much additional work has gone into making it bigger and better than before. Now that it’s even expanded to the real world to include an anime series airing in Japan and global via Netflix in 2019, as well as a live-action web series, it’s poised to grow even more in the coming months.
