The troubled Marine Corps veteran who gunned down 12 people at a California bar ended the attack by taking his own life, officials have determined.
Ian David Long, 28, died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, an autopsy shows, confirming what had been cops’ working theory since the nightmarish massacre.
Dr. Christopher Young, the chief medical examiner for Ventura County, declined to reveal whether any physical abnormalities were found during the exam, and added that his office is still awaiting the full results of a toxicology test.
Meanwhile, investigators are still left in search of a motive for the Wednesday night assault on the Borderline Bar & Grill as it was hosting its popular weekly “College Country Night” that saw it packed with local students.
One angle at which authorities are taking a close look is whether Long believed that an ex-girlfriend may have been at the bar at the time of the attack.
“We’re going to exhaust every investigative means possible,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Garo Kuredjian told The Ventura County Star.
Investigators are also parsing an Instagram post that Long made amid the onslaught.
The exact content of the post, which has since been taken down along with the rest of Long’s social media accounts, wasn’t immediately revealed.
But it was reported previously that in the post, which at the time hadn’t been tied to a specific social media platform, Long insisted that his attack was motivated not by insanity, but by boredom.
The sick sentiment echoes a final Facebook post Long made shortly before the slaughter .
“I hope they call me insane,” he wrote. “Yeah… I’m insane, but the only thing you people do after these shootings is ‘hopes and prayers’ … and wonder why these keep happening…”
