With the next generation PlayStation 5 looming on the horizon, Square Enix is now rumored to have begun working on their own high-profile title for the console.
As the PlayStation 4 turns five years old today, suggestions and speculation on the end of the current console generation have become a hot topic as of late. While a handful of AAA titles have already been announced and confirmed to be launching next generation, another publisher may have accidently revealed they’ve started working on software for the ever-approaching PlayStation 5.
As spotted on Resetera by user nolifebr, Tomohiro Tokoro, who is a 3D Character Model Lead Artist at Luminous Productions, noted on his since-removed LinkedIn profile that he is currently working on a “New AAA Game for PS5.” Luminous Productions develops under the Square Enix publishing arm, and was created by Hajime Tabata with the purpose of “producing AAA games.”
While Tabata can be credited with the creation of Luminous Productions, he announced his departure from the company last week. With Tabata leaving, the remaining DLC planned for 2016’s Final Fantasy XV have been canceled. The last three DLC episodes are set to release sometime in 2019.
It shouldn’t come as a shock that Square Enix and Luminous Productions have begun working on a AAA game for the PlayStation 5. The question, however, is what could the game be? There’s a chance that game could be Final Fantasy VII Remake, which has been kept under wraps almost three years now, and is nowhere near releasing anytime soon, especially not for PS4.
The remake of the 1997 JRPG has gone through its share of development struggles and was announced as a multi-part series. Plus, with Kingdom Hearts 3 launching in the next couple of months, there isn’t a full team working on the remake at the moment. Since updated rumors suggest a 2020 launch for PlayStation 5, the smart move for Square Enix would likely be for them to hold off until the PlayStation 5 has an established player base.
While Square Enix can be added to the list of studios gearing up for the PlayStation 5, they’re not the first to do so publicly. At E3 this past summer, Bethesda revealed Elder Scrolls VI to cap off its keynote presentation, while also confirming that, given their development pipeline, there’s no chance of the successor to Skyrim coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
