The 61st annual Grammy Awards category list was announced on Friday.
The 61st annual Grammy Awards is set to air on Sunday, February 10,2019, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. EST, the Recording Academy announced.
« We are delighted to host the world’s premier music event back in our hometown and look forward to celebrating the remarkable musical contributions made by songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, and recording artists, » said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the Recording Academy, in a statement. « As always, Grammy season will kick off with a series of events that showcase various genres of music, educational programs, and our charitable initiatives. We look forward to working with our Los Angeles partners to produce some remarkable and unforgettable events. »
During CBS This Morning on Friday, 2018 best new artist winner Alessia Cara, Apple Music host Zane Lowe, Janelle Monae and Shawn Mendes announced the select categories with the nominees. The list was also posted to Grammy.com following the broadcast.
Here’s everything we know about the event so far:
It remains unclear who will be the host of the annual event. There was no mention of who will be hosting when the Recording Academy made its announcement. The Late Show TV host James Corden hosted the event for the past two years and is a possible candidate to host the award show for the third year in a row.
The Grammys does not hold a public vote but takes careful consideration on how the nominees are selected. The process starts with record companies submitting entries that are screened for eligibility and category placement.
“The Academy’s voting members, all involved in the creative and technical processes of recording, then participate in (1) the nominating process that determines the five finalists in each category; and (2) the final voting process which determines the GRAMMY winners,” the Grammy website states.
A screening session is held by more than 350 experts in different music to make sure the nominees are put into appropriate categories like Rap, R&B, Rock, Jazz, Country, Latin, and many others, according to the website. The first-round ballot and members can only vote in their area of expertise. They are allowed to vote up to 15 categories in the genre fields plus the four categories of the general field like record of the year, album of the year, song of the year, and best new artist.
