Tropical Storm Isaias has strengthened and winds could reach near hurricane strength as it approaches Florida later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Isaias currently is bringing life-threatening flash floods and gusty winds to Puerto Rico.
A Tropical Storm Watch is issued, as of 5 p.m., for parts of the east coast of Florida. Areas under the watch span from Ocean Reef northward to Sebastian Inlet.
The projected path of the storm continues to keep most of Florida in its track. The state could start to feel the impacts from Isaias by the end of the week and into the weekend.
The National Weather Service said Florida’s east coast from Jupiter south to Miami could see winds of 58 to 73 mph from Isaias but warned the forecast is likely to change.
Winds could reach near hurricane strength, 70 mph, by Saturday, according to the Hurricane Center. A storm is classified as a hurricane when sustained winds reach 74 mph.
