A bipartisan infrastructure bill of nearly $1 trillion looks primed to win GOP backing in the Senate, after a comment last week by President Biden briefly threatened its fate, leading Republicans said Sunday. The negotiated package of funding for roads and highways, electric vehicle infrastructure and transit systems has enough support among Republicans to pass the Senate, where it needs at least 60 votes, said Utah Republican Mitt Romney, one of the lawmakers who helped negotiate the compromise. “I believe we will have enough to get it passed,” Romney said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I don’t think there’s any question but that Republicans will support this legislation if it comes to the floor.” The president last week welcomed the negotiated deal with its $973 billion price tag, then indicated it would need to move “in tandem” with a larger measure to expand spending on Medicare, child care and other social issues — only to turn around on Saturday and say he would support the deal “without hesitation” and had not meant to threaten it.
