Coronavirus: ‘We are now in early stages of third wave’, says WHO chief

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the Delta variant of the virus, first detected in India, was now present in more than 111 countries.
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday warned countries about the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. “Unfortunately…we are now in the early stages of a third wave,” he said. The director general recalled the sustained decline in daily infections and fatalities in the last few months that was driven by the increasing rate of vaccination in Europe and North America. Tedros also spoke about the recent surge in Delta variant cases. He said the virus was continuing to evolve, resulting in more transmissible variants. “The Delta variant is now in more than 111 countries and we expect it to soon be the dominant Covid-19 strain circulating worldwide, if it isn’t already,” he said. WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan had also said on July 9 that the pandemic was not slowing down.
