Classic canvas popular in tennis in the 1980s and the stonewashed denim that made an appearance in 1990s tennis both get a modern twist on an unexpected sneaker and tennis ball collaboration between Penn and streetwear brand Dizygotic.
The Dizygotic x Penn Project Alpha, which launched Aug. 30, includes a pair of shoes that feature denim, canvas and a touch of tennis felt. The project also includes a tennis ball set.
“The material story is the foundation,” Michael Hernandez, project lead for Dizygotic and footwear industry veteran, tells me. “Tennis has been trending for a couple of years and continues.”
The Penn project is the first from Dizygotic with a brand, as all past collaborations were with artists or celebrities. It also represents a connection to sport, in this case tennis, another first for the brand. “Many collaborations have found inspiration in tennis and the trend continues,” Hernandez says, adding that major brands have served up products in the streetwear space for both on and off the court of play.
