Jan. 26 (UPI) — Kim Jong Un has instructed North Korea workers to complete work along a wide boulevard dedicated to the country’s scientists by April 15, the birth anniversary of Kim Il Sung .
According to Pyongyang’s state-controlled news agency KCNA, the North Korean leader provided field guidance at the site, which includes rows of high-rise buildings.
« Comrade Kim Jong Un provided on-site guidance at Ryomyong Street and enthusiastically appealed to soldiers and builders to finish construction before the Day of the Sun, and demonstrate the longevity and national strength of self-reliant [North Korea]. »
During his visit, Kim reportedly looked around then said the site exemplified the rising « socialist civilization piercing the sky, » made possible by the « tens of millions of soldiers and their indomitable spirit. »
« This place, unlike any other place to exist, is a paradise on Earth made by our own hands, » Kim said during his visit, according to KCNA. « In the midst of a feverish military confrontation initiated by the enemies, the construction on Ryomyong Street is not merely a construction of a street, but a showdown between socialism and imperialism and a battle guarding socialism. »
Kim added the street is evidence that « any sanctions and pressures will never block the victory of [North Korean] troops and the people. »
KCNA reported Wednesday that 80 percent of the work on the street had been completed.
Pyongyang had been aiming for a completion date in December 2016, but may have experienced delays after workers and soldiers were mobilized in flood relief efforts in North Hamgyong Province.
Last year, a building on Ryomyong Street may have collapsed , leading to the death of « hundreds, » according to a North Korea source.
