Joey Berry II finished with a team-high 26 points and Justin Jackson finished with 24 in the Tar Heels’ 92-80 win over Butler. Kentucky got a career-high 39 points from De’Aaron Fox in an 86-75 victory against No. 3 UCLA.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — It will be fourth seed Florida versus No. 7 South Carolina in the NCAA’s East Regional final at New York’s Madison Square Garden. KeVAughn Allen scored 35 points and Chris Chiozza (chee-AH’-zah) nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Florida an 84-83 overtime win against Wisconsin. Sindarius Thornwell contributed 24 points as the Gamecocks routed Baylor, 70-50.
UNDATED (AP) — Oakland officials are making a last-minute plea to entice the Raiders to stay in the Bay Area. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf has revealed details of investors’ plans for a 55,000-seat stadium at the current Coliseum site and vowed that she and the city are doing all they can to keep the team. Schaaf wrote that the New York hedge fund Fortress Management Group is willing to work on terms for a $600 million contribution to the $1.3 billion, football-only facility.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Dustin Johnson has advanced to the single-elimination knockout stage of Match Play in Austin, Texas. Johnson has led all 46 holes he has played, while Phil Mickelson moved into the knockout stage by leading in 41 of his 42 holes. Bill Haas and Zach Johnson avoided elimination and will be part of Saturday’s play.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Detroit Tigers right fielder J. D. Martinez is expected to miss the beginning of the season with a sprained right foot suffered last weekend. Martinez hit.307 with 22 home runs and 68 RBIs in 120 games last year, when the Tigers finished second in the AL Central. The injury is an early blow to a Detroit team that was hoping for improved health this season after keeping its roster largely intact.
