Grambling wide receiver Chad Williams, a Baton Rouge native, was selected by Arizona in the fourth round of the NFL Draft Friday.
Williams, considered by scouts a raw prospect, was taken in the compensatory round, the 98th player taken overall.
In 2016, he led the SWAC with 90 catches for 1,337 yards and 11 touchdowns and was named a second-team FCS All-American and first-team All-SWAC for Grambling’s league championship team. Williams also was a first-team All-SWAC pick in 2015 with 64 catches for 1,012 yards and 10 TDs.
Against Arizona in 2016, he caught 13 passes for 152 yards.
Williams, 6-foot-1,204 pounds, played quarterback and defensive back at Madison Prep, a small charter school.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein writes that Williams, « plays bigger than his size. Confident in his hands and snatches the ball way out in front of this frame. Shows some physicality after the catch and isn’t easy to bring down. »
Williams ran into some off-field trouble in 2016 before the season started, resulting in a one-game suspension. He was charged with marijuana possession and possession of firearms on the LSU campus.
