Roy Oliver, six-year veteran, was terminated for violating department policies in shooting death of Jordan Edwards

A suburban Dallas police officer who fatally shot a 15-year-old boy in a moving vehicle has been fired.
Roy Oliver, a six-year veteran with the department in Balch Springs, Texas, was fired Tuesday, Police Chief Jonathan Haber announced in a press conference.
Haber said that Oliver can appeal the decision and would only say that the officer violated department policies in the shooting death of 15-year-old Jordan Edwards.

Edwards was a freshman student and football player who was fatally shot in the head while leaving a house party in Balch Springs.
Haber previously announced that the officer fired as the car was driving away — not as it reversed toward officers, as the department previously claimed.
Police first said the vehicle backed up toward police at the scene « in an aggressive manner, » but Haber corrected the record on Monday, saying police video showed the vehicle « moving forward as the officers approached. »
Edwards’ family released a statement shortly after the announcement, calling for charges against the officer.
« We are grateful the decision has been made to terminate the officer responsible for Jordan’s murder, » the statement read. « Over the past 24 hours Chief Haber has made commendable strides toward justice. However, there remains a long road ahead. We anxiously await this officer’s identification and arrest for the crime of murder. »
The Dallas County district attorney’s office and Dallas County sheriff’s office are investigating the case.
