WASHINGTON (AP) — The acting director of the FBI is undercutting how the White House explains President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey.
Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe contradicts the Trump administration’s characterization of the investigation into Russian meddling with the U. S. presidential election.
A White House spokeswoman has called the Russia investigation « one of the smallest things » the FBI is dealing with. But McCabe told a Senate panel on Thursday that the investigation is « highly significant. »
McCabe also says that the vast majority of FBI employees support Comey. The White House has said the former FBI director had lost the backing of rank-and-file agents.
Trump maintains that Comey has told him that he is not under investigation, but McCabe suggested under questioning that is highly improbable.
