The Cleveland police department fired a police officer who fatally shot a twelve-year-old black boy for not adhering to department rules Tuesday.
The Cleveland Police Department fired an officer for not adhering to department rules Tuesday. The officer first attracted national attention when he fatally shot a 12-year-old black boy.
The department decided to fire Officer Timothy Loehmann because he did not provide accurate information on his application and broke department policies, reports CNN.
The decision comes after a two-year investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lohemann’s 2014 fatal shooting of Tamir Rice.
“After over two years of investigation by our agency, the county prosecutor’s office (and) the sheriff’s department, I think we’ ve come to what we consider a fair conclusion to this process, ” Police Chief Calvin Williams said during a Tuesday press conference, adding that the firing had nothing to do with Loehmann’s shooting of Rice.
Another police officer who was present at the scene received a punishment as a result of the investigation into the shooting. Officer Frank Garmback is suspended for ten days because of how he drove to the scene of the shooting. He will also have to undergo tactile training.
Loehmann said he fatally shot Rice after the boy tried to reach for a gun. It turned out Rice was carrying a BB gun.
The city of Cleveland settled with the Rice family in 2016, paying out $6 million in a wrongful death lawsuit.
