The Supreme Court has acquitted three former presidents of West Japan Railway Co. <9021>, or JR West, over a derailment accident on its Fukuchiyama Line that killed 106 passengers and the driver in April 2005, it was learned on Tuesday.

The decision, dated Monday, to reject an appeal by lawyers who acted as prosecutors, marks the end of trials of those alleged to be responsible for the country’s deadliest train accident since the breakup and privatization of the Japanese National Railways 30 years ago, with no one found guilty.
