While America was consumed with the shooting of House Whip Steve Scalise this morning in Virginia, another gunman has killed at least two people in San Francisco. The shooting occurred at a UPS package delivery facility around 9 a.m. today, NBC News reports. The incident occurred in the area of 17th Street and Vermont Street in the popular California city. At least three other victims are wounded, but no other deaths have been reported.
The San Francisco Police Department has assured the public that the suspect was down and in police custody. After the suspect was subdued, he was hospitalized. ABC7 now reports that the gunman has died from his wounds. Speculation suggests the gunman was a disgruntled UPS employee, but it has not been confirmed despite the shooter donning a brown uniform.
A spokesperson for UPS released a statement regarding the tragic incident.
KTVU spoke with an employee of the UPS facility who said the gunman open fire on the main sorting floor of the building. Multiple witnesses also described hearing shots fired and lots of screaming. The wounded victims were transported to the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
Two employees who chose to remain anonymous explained the shooter entered the facility without suspicion, the San Francisco Examiner reports.
Antonio Salic was across the street when he witnessed employees running from the building, and he later described the scene to CNN .
Salic also noticed employees on top of the building with their hands up while they were awaiting police assistance.
The San Francisco Police Department is urging people to stay away from the area as the investigation unfolds. A thorough search of the building found no other gunman, and it’s believed the shooter acted alone. The entire facility was checked and cleared approximately three hours after the shooting began. While the motive is still unclear, SFPD stated they had no reason to believe the shooting was terror-related.
