The Firecracker 5K/10K joins a pancake breakfast, dog show, patriotic parade, flag march, live music and a big fireworks show finale.
The run/walk begins at 7 a.m. at Canyon High School’s lower field; the pancake breakfast is 7: 30 to 9: 30 a.m. in the Canyon High cafeteria; and the Yankee Doodle Dog Show is at 9: 30 a.m. in the campus’ outdoor amphitheater.
This year’s parade begins at 1 p.m.; it starts out from Canyon High’s lower parking lot area. The parade includes military tributes, local high school bands, city officials and more. Then the fun heads to Peralta Park, 115 N. Pinney Drive. There will be food vendors and exhibitors at the park and entertainment before the fireworks finale.

***Summer reading with prizes and fun
The Anaheim Libraries are offering summer learning with STEAM reading. The branches’ “Reading by Design” summer reading program will run through July 29. Readers of any age can earn prizes for the books that are checked out and read. The focus this summer is on science, technology, engineering, arts and math, or STEAM, for children and adults. ***Quartermania fundraiser planned
A Coins for Kids QuarterMania fundraiser for the Muzeo is planned for Friday, July 14.
QuarterMania is a high-energy auction-raffle fundraiser. Bring a roll of quarters to bid on goods from boutique vendors and local businesses. Women and men are invited. There will be more than 50 items, opportunity drawings and silent auctions.
Tickets are $35 and include a paddle. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the auction begins at 6: 30 p.m. Event will be held at the Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center, 241 S. Anaheim Blvd. Tickets must be purchased by July 12. Information: muzeo.org or 714-956-8936.
***Author event at the Muzeo
On July 15, the Muzeo will host a special presentation by award-winning author Stephen Maitland-Lewis. He will discuss his latest novel, “Botticelli’s Bastard.” His very interesting life includes being a longtime pen pal of Louis Armstrong – a friendship that started when he was 12.
Tickets for the 1 p.m. event are $10 and may be purchased at muzeo.org/tickets by July 8. Books will be available for purchase and the author will sign them. The Muzeo is at 241 S. Anaheim Blvd., at Broadway. Parking is available in the structure between Center Street Promenade and Oak Street, just west of Anaheim Boulevard. Validation is available at the gift shop.
***Golf tourney benefits YMCA
Fore The Kids Golf Tournament, the YMCA’s annual Vince Taormina Charity Classic, is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 10 at Tustin Ranch Golf Club. Business and community leaders will be on hand to play while giving kids and teens the opportunity to participate in YMCA’s life-changing programs. This year’s honorees are Malcolm Ortego and Tom Itagliata of the Freeman Company. Sponsorships are available. Check the website for specifics, anaheimymca.org. or call 714-635-9622.
Summer camp registration is open for the YMCA’s Camp Miehana. The camp helps youth disconnect from every day distractions and reconnect with nature, peers and volunteer mentors. Financial assistance and payment plans are available. Camp is open to children ages 7 to 12. Dates are July 22-July 29 and the fee is $485. Registration deadline is July 7. ***AHS alumni support school, students

The organization recently awarded $17,500 in scholarships to 16 graduates for the 2016-17 school year. ***Summer classes and camps
Registration for the Community Services Department’s summer programs is open. There are summer classes and specialty camps offered for gymnastics, art, fitness, dance, music, science, cooking, sports and more. There are activities for children of all ages as well as adults.
