Harvey is the ninth named storm in the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.
Tropical Storm Harvey formed Thursday afternoon (Aug. 17) in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Lesser Antilles. The National Hurricane Center expects Harvey to enter the eastern Caribbean Sea by Friday afternoon.
Harvey is not expected to affect Louisiana. Harvey is the ninth named storm of the 2017 Atlantic Ocean hurricane season.
Data gathered Thursday morning from an U. S. Air Force flight over the storm found Harvey had maximum winds around 40 miles per hour with stronger gusts.
Harvey is currently moving west at 18 miles per hour.
The storm is expected to move through the Lesser Antilles overnight and enter the Caribbean on Friday. The current trajectory shows the storm moving into the western Caribbean over the weekend before hitting the Honduran coast Monday afternoon and then moving further inland toward Belize and Guatemala by Tuesday afternoon.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the islands of Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The island of Dominica is under a tropical storm watch.
Current forecasts do not show Harvey developing into a hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center said it is watching various models to predict whether the storm will intensify or degenerate as it moves closer to Central America. Two of the models the center uses show the storm steadily intensifying over coming days, while two others show the storm starting to weaken.
