North Korean President Kim Jong Un thanked the scientists and technicians who took part in the regime’s successful detonation of a nuclear device last week by holding a large gala in their honor, according to a report.
The despot hosted the celebration – which included a banquet, an art performance and a photo session with him – for conducting the country’s sixth nuclear test, Reuters reported, citing state-run media.
Kim said those who helped with the blast “brought the great auspicious event of the national history, an extra-large event through the perfect success in the test of H-bomb.”
He lauded the crew for “taking the lead” in achieving “the final goal of completing the state nuclear force.”
“The recent test of the H-bomb is the great victory won by the Korean people at the cost of their blood while tightening their belts in the arduous period, ” Kim said, according to North Korean media.
Photos of the event, believed to be held on Saturday, a national holiday celebrating the country’s founding, shows a beaming Kim with two of his most prominent scientists – Ri Hong Sop, head of North Korea’s
Nuclear Weapons Institute, and Hong Sung Mu, deputy director of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea’s munitions industry department.
Kim’s government tested the weapon last Sunday, prompting US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley to ask the Security Council to impose another round of sanctions against Pyongyang.
In July, the regime successfully test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles with the range capable of striking the US mainland.
