Vivo at CES 2018 showcased ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone.
Following a teaser this week, Vivo at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) unveiled the world’s first smartphone to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor provided by Synaptics. The company says the smartphone is ready for production and demonstrated how users will be able to unlock the device by placing the finger on the display. Under display fingerprint sensor is a technology that has been long expected to arrive as smartphone manufactures bring out edge-to-edge displays.
Vivo has been toying with in-screen fingerprint sensors for a while now. It showcased a concept phone at last year’s MWC with an under display fingerprint sensor provided by Qualcomm. However, the sensor wasn’t as responsive as Vivo would have liked. Synaptics late last year announced that it entered mass manufacturing with its optical in-display fingerprint sensors, called Clear ID. The company said a top five OEM would be getting its first batch of sensors and that brand is now confirmed to be Vivo.
Apart from its highlight in-display fingerprint sensor, nothing else is known about the smartphone as of now. Vivo said that the handset will be announced early this year although the exact date has not been revealed yet. We’ll know more about the smartphone as we approach its launch. With Vivo’s announcement, in-display fingerprint sensor is now officially here and we expect more companies to use the technology as they look to come with bezel-less displays. So far, manufacturers have moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of their full-screen smartphones, a solution that hasn’t been too popular with people.
« With our efforts in extensive consumer research and long-term R&D investment, Vivo is well positioned to pioneer the development of fingerprint scanning technology. We first presented a prototype of our fingerprint scanning solution at MWC Shanghai 2017 based on an ultrasonic sensor, and have remained committed to realizing our vision for future smartphones, » said Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo. « Today’s showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience. We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon. »
