SUMMIT TWP., MI – Jackson College is set to host its annual Black History Month celebration.
This year’s event is at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in Bert Walker Hall, Rooms 144-145. The celebration is free and open to the public.
This year’s program features a historical tribute, musical entertainment by Larry Sumner, Jr., authentic « soul food » and beverages.
The annual event, hosted by the college’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, examines the history of Black History Month and the contributions of black Americans.
Black History Month grew out of the first « Negro History Week, » in 1926, the brainchild of historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans.
February coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Since 1976, every U. S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
