Amazon is looking for that elusive ’Game of Thrones’-sized hit.
Money can’t buy happiness, but can it buy a Game of Thrones -sized hit?
Amazon Video has some fine shows, like Transparent, Patriot, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but it doesn’t appear to have a ratings smash on the level of Netflix’s Stranger Things and HBO’s Game of Thrones, or an Outstanding Drama Series winner like Hulu with The Handmaid’s Tale. But it does have billions of dollars, which the streaming service will use on a Lord of the Rings series (the most expensive show ever) and the just-announced Conan.
Sapochnik directed many of the most visually-stunning episodes of Game of Thrones, including “Hardhome” and “Battle of the Bastards.”
The series, assuming it gets picked up, will take place after the titular barbarian is driven out of his homeland; he now “wanders the mysterious and treacherous world of civilization where he searches for purpose in a place that rejects him as a mindless savage,” according to Deadline. Jason Momoa, who played Conan in a 2011 movie, will presumably not be involved. Amazon can’t make the Thrones connections that obvious.
