With Sea of Thieves release only a month away, there’s one thing left to ask: Will microtransactions affect it as well? According to Rare, Sea of Thieves microtransactions may indeed be included in the game but not in the form we expected it.
According to design director Mike Chapman, Sea of Thieves might feature slight microtransactions, but they’ll be cosmetic and won’t affect your progress in any way. Rare doesn’t want their game’s reputation to be compromised by paid items so loot boxes won’t be a thing in the game.
Sea of Thieves will get its first major update three months after its release and that’s when microtransactions will be added to it along with new content. Rare’s executive producer, Joe Neate told IGN:
He also revealed that the first paid content to be added in Sea of Thieves will come in the form of pets. They’ll be strictly cosmetic and will add an emotional feeling to the game. He specified, saying that “it’ll kind of benefit everyone socially and emotionally. So if I’ve got a cat, I can pick up it up and look at it, or you can pick it up and run off with it. Obviously, when you put it down it’ll come back”.
Sea of Thieves microtransactions, above all, is a means for the developing company to keep on working on the game and get revenue in the long run. Keeping a game constantly updated takes time and cash, so microtransactions are the best way for Sea of Thieves to have new content fast and make it even more fun. Neate says:
Sea of Thieves is an upcoming action-adventure title in development at Rare and will launch exclusively for PC and Xbox One. The game will also feature cross-platform play between PC and Xbox One. You can see its PC system requirements here.
How do you feel about the Sea of Thieves microtransactions? Will that affect your desire to grab the game?
