Former Trump campaign aide Michael Caputo met with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team at noon on Wednesday as part of their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, New York Magazine reported.
The meeting took place just one day after he cursed the investigation for the “visceral impact” it had on his family and advocated for an “investigation of the investigators” involved in the probe.
Caputo, who has a background as a political operative in the U. S. and Russia, told the magazine he expected to be asked about his time as an aide with the campaign, his previous work in Russia in the 1990s, and his connections to GOP operative Roger Stone and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort during the meeting.
He also said he provided “upwards of a thousand” documents to Mueller and his team, including email correspondence with Stone, Manafort, and Rick Gates, though his attorney Dennis Vacco told the magazine the majority of the documents he provided were requested by congressional committees and not the special counsel.
“There hasn’t been a demand for any documents,” Vacco said, noting that the special counsel first reached out about Caputo’s time with the Trump campaign last month. “I was not surprised by the call, although I was always hoping that the call would not come.”
On Tuesday, Caputo was interviewed privately by the Senate Intelligence Committee. In a series of prepared marks provided to CNN, he blasted the investigation.
“Your investigation and others into the allegations of Trump campaign collusion with Russia are costing my family a great deal of money — more than $125,000 — and making a visceral impact on my children,” he told the committee in the remarks.
“What American needs is an investigation of the investigators. I want to know who is paying for the spies’ work and coordinating this attack on President Donald Trump,” Caputo said.
“I want to know who Dan Jones is talking to across the investigations — from the FBI, to the Southern District of New York, to the [office of the special counsel], to the Department of Justice, to Congress,“ he continued. ”I want to know because God d**n you to hell.”
