Christina Aguilera said « The Voice » is a « churning hamster wheel » focused on « making good TV moments. »
May 3 (UPI) — Former The Voice coach Christina Aguilera says the show is no longer about the music.
The 37-year-old singer said in the May 5 issue of Billboard that the NBC reality competition is a « churning hamster wheel » focused on « making good TV moments. »
« It became something that I didn’t feel was what I had signed up for in season one, » she explained of her departure. « You realize it’s not about music. It’s about making good TV moments and massaging a story. »
Aguilera served as a coach in Seasons 1,2,3,5,8 and 10, and said the series became an « energy sucker » in her life.
« I was longing for freedom, » the star said before recounting her post-show routine.
« I would just take everything off — the makeup, all of it — and would blast hip-hop, or Nirvana, ‘Creep,’ Slayer, » she shared. « Anything like that to get me out of that zone, that TV mode. »
Aguilera is instead focused on her eighth studio album, Liberation, which debuts June 15. She released the single « Accelerate » featuring Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz and a music video for the song Thursday.
Aguilera also collaborated with Demi Lovato, Julia Michaels and Kanye West on Liberation. She shared a full track list for the album Thursday on Twitter.
