The IPL is heating up, and you don’t want to miss out. We explain how to watch every IPL 2018 cricket match live on TV and online in the UK, US and India
Purists may love the Test format but the IPL is the biggest and richest cricket competition in the world, with thrilling games, fanatical crowds and huge worldwide TV audiences. If you’d like to see what the fuss is all about, this is the article for you.
Here’s how to watch every IPL 2018 cricket match live on TV or online. The competition runs for seven weeks, from Saturday 7 April until the final on 27 May. The next match is:
That all depends on where you live: the games are shown on Sky in the UK, Willow in the US and Star Sports in India, as outlined below.
Before we get on to each country’s broadcast schedule, note that it is possible to access overseas coverage (which may be a better deal for you) if you use a VPN. We’ve rounded up the best VPN deals for PC and Mac, but you won’t go far wrong if you pick NordVPN.
Open the VPN, choose which country to browse from, and access that country’s coverage online.
Sky has the rights to IPL broadcasts in the UK. It is showing all 60 matches on its Sky Sports Cricket channel, which Sky subscribers will find on channel 404. Some games are also available on Sky Sports Main Event and/or Sky Sports Mix.
If you’re new to Sky you can purchase Sky from £20 per month and then an extra £18 for Sky Sports. If you’re an existing Sky customer and want to add Sky Sports to your package it costs from £18 per month.
You don’t necessarily need to be a Sky subscriber to get Sky Sports Cricket, however. If you don’t want to commit to a long-term contract, Now TV’s pay-as-you-go Sky Sports Pass is a better option: it lets you pay for a day, week or month of Sky Sports (including the non-cricket channels – so you can watch lesser sports too).
A day pass costs £7.99. It lasts precisely 24 hours from purchase, so think hard about when to activate it: choose one of the days with two IPL matches, or the day before one of them so you can catch the 3.30pm match and still have access for the 11.30am one the next day.
A week pass costs £12.99, while the month pass usually costs £33.99 and rolls on to the next month unless you cancel it, but at time of writing there’s a deal that gets you the month pass for £20 provided you commit to two months at that price… and again it will auto-renew.
In the US you can watch the IPL on the dedicated cricket channel Willow. Willow is a cable channel available via various providers including Comcast and the satellite provider DISH Network, and streams games live (to fee payers) at Willow.tv .
The channel has a dedicated iOS app and another for the Apple TV. There’s also an Android app.
In India the games are shown on Star Sports, a network owned by 21st Century Fox. Star shows highlights on the website of Hotstar, its parent network, but you have to use a VPN to access these outside India.
Online, at the official IPL website. Relatively brief highlights (usually 7-10 minutes) appear there about an hour after the match finishes. The TV channels listed below will also show highlights – check the schedule.
Probably ESPNcricinfo, which does ball-by-ball scoring for almost every game you can think of, and live commentary for all the big ones (which the IPL should qualify as). The site also has an excellent free app for iOS and we imagine the Android one is decent, too.
If you’re also a snooker fan, here’s how to watch the World Snooker Championship.
Here’s when all the games take place. Times given for each location are correct on that date, ie UK times are BST. US times take account for daylight saving time and labelled as EDT for Eastern, CDT for Central and PDT for Pacific. India does not observe daylight saving time.
