The Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide, Shawn Layden, says the company does not plan to reveal the PlayStation 5 console during E3 2018.
Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment officially announced the date and time for its PlayStation E3 2018 press conference, confirming that the likes of such first-party exclusives as Death Stranding, The Last of Us: Part 2, Spider-Man, and more would be on display at this year’s big event. While confirmation of these titles making an appearance during the company’s showcase has surely pleased numerous PlayStation fans, some may have had their hopes set on PS5 being unveiled. Unfortunately for those fans, such a major hardware reveal doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
This much was confirmed by the Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide, Shawn Layden, with the SIE head recently sitting down with the PlayStation Blogcast to say that the company has no intentions on revealing the PS5 during E3 2018. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the tech firm isn’t planning on using its own event later this year – that is, PlayStation Experience 2018 – to debut the next iteration of PlayStation hardware.
Now that E3 2018 has been confirmed as being free of PlayStation 5 news, this ought to stop such rampant speculation regarding what kind of information Sony fans should expect about the system during the company’s presentation at the event. As previously mentioned, though, there’s always the chance that the console is in production in some capacity. In fact, there was a rumor circulating about a couple of months ago that PS5 dev kits were already in the hands of some developers.
With Sony understandably keeping details regarding the PS5 close to its vest, there’s no telling when or where the company will decide to introduce the next-gen system. That said, though, it’s safe to surmise PlayStation diehards everywhere will share a collective sigh of relief after learning there’s still more time to go before the next console drops. After all, the PlayStation 4 Pro has only been on the market for about a year and a half, which has barely given developers enough time to tap into the upgraded console’s full potential. So, here’s hoping for a 2020 launch at the earliest.
Sony‘s PlayStation E3 2018 press conference will take place on Monday, June 11 at 6:00 PM Pacific Time.
