‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Hits $1 Billion Worldwide

NewsHub“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” hit $1 billion at the global box office this weekend, after earning $7 million domestically over the three days.
“Rogue One’s” total domestic gross climbed to $512.2 million. The film opened on Dec. 16 to great reviews — the film now holds a “fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score of 85 percent.
Last year, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took only 12 days to hit the $1 billion global box office mark — the fastest film to ever cross the benchmark.
Disney’s “Moana” also hit a major milestone this weekend: The animated film featuring the voices of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho has passed the $500 million worldwide mark.

It’s the fourth consecutive Walt Disney Animation Studios to reach this milestone, following “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6,” and “Zootopia.” Domestically, the movie has earned $236 million.
“Rogue One” has proven a worldwide success in most territories (except China, where it has underperformed).
Directed by Gareth Edwards, the “Star Wars” prequel stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

Jones plays rebellion leader Jyn Erso. It takes place between the prequel and original trilogies and depicts Erso’s efforts to steal the plans for the Death Star, the ultimate weapon of the Galactic Empire, which has terrorized children everywhere since the first “Star Wars” in 1977.
