There is no need for the appointment of a special prosecutor to look into Russia’s interference in the 2016 American presidential elections, because there are already several congressional investigations under way, as well as the FBI probe, Republican Sen. John Thune told Fox News on Wednesday.
The South Dakota senator said that he is fully confident that those investigations are «independent and objective and are going to get to the bottom of all the facts.»
Thune added that he did not get the impression that «the American people think that [arranging for a special prosecutor to conduct another investigation] is what we should be doing with our time.»
Thune, however, did say he has questions about the timing of FBI Director James Comey’s firing.

«The timing was right on the heels of an announcement that there was gonna be a grand jury seated to ask questions about the investigation into Russia, » Thune said, emphasizing that this fact made «the timing a little odd in my view.»
Thune added, however, that he will wait for a further explanation from the White House and Justice Department for why the firing happened at this time.
