The blue and red fake clouds may be visible along the Atlantic Coast stretching from North Carolina up to New York on Sunday.
East Coast residents in the United States will have the chance to catch a colorful sky in the early hours of Sunday morning as NASA launches a sounding rocket that will create artificial red and blue clouds.
The clouds may be visible along the Atlantic Coast stretching from North Carolina up to New York, depending on the weather, after the rocket launches from the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
The two-stage Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket will deploy ten canisters that will launch blue-green and red vapor to artificial clouds. Scientists plan to track the clouds to study particle motions in space.
While the vapor will contain barium, strontium and cupric-oxide, NASA cautions that they will pose «absolutely no hazard to residents along the mid-Atlantic coast» because of the altitude they will be released at.
The launch was originally scheduled for May 31, and subsequently as recently as Saturday morning, but NASA has been forced to scrub the launch multiple times. The organization hopes to launch Sunday morning.
For residents along the East Coast, the clouds will be visible around 4: 30 a.m. EST. Anyone outside the viewing region can catch the NASA live stream of the sight.
