A more mature, experienced Spider-Man game is coming from Sony. Here’s what we know about the Spider-Man PS4 game including the first gameplay footage.
A lot of new games were announced at Sony’s E3 2016 conference, including Days Gone and God of War. Another is the brand new Spider-Man title for the PS4.
Here’s everything we know about the game from the first announcement trailer up to the gameplay reveal at E3 2017 .
So far the most we know in terms of release date is that the game is due some time in 2018, as confirmed by the E3 2017 gameplay trailer.
That hasn’t stopped Amazon opening pre-orders for the game though, which is a PS4 exclusive.
Thanks to E3 2017 we’ve seen our first gameplay from Spider-Man, and so now have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The nine-minute clip shows off a mission in which Spider-Man intervenes in a fight between two rival criminal gangs. In many ways, the game looks to have taken inspiration from Rocksteady’s successful Batman: Arkham games, with a blend of stealth and larger melee brawls.
Spider-Man can use his agility and webbing to sneak round enemies before incapacitating them one at a time, though the bright daytime setting means there’s less of a focus on hiding in the shadows than in the Batman titles.
When a fight becomes inevitable, Spidey looks to be as agile as you’d hope, flipping around, throwing bad guys up into the air, and using webbing to immobilise some goons while he takes others on head-on. The webbing can also be used to throw nearby objects like bricks, and at one point even swing round a giant metal girder to take out a group of enemies in one go.
The latter half of the footage takes more inspiration from Uncharted, with an exciting semi-cinematic chase sequence replete with quick-time events as Spider-Man works to save civilians, take down his enemies, and dodge obstacles in the environment.
Oh, and stick around to end of the video for a tease about the appearance of a certain well-known Spider-Man character who we suspect may have a bigger role to play in the game…
It’s worth clarifying that the game won’t be based on the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film or have any connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that it will feature a more experienced Spidey rather than a young Peter Parker.
Finally, this is separate from the upcoming ‘ Avengers Project ‘ games from Square-Enix, and won’t be part of the same shared universe.
