The Navy sent for Japanese Coast Guard assistance following the collision that occurred at approximately 2: 30 a.m. local time.
The USS Fitzgerald, a U. S. Navy destroyer, collided with a merchant vessel on Saturday morning local time about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, according to a Navy statement.
The Navy sent for Japanese Coast Guard assistance following the collision that occurred at approximately 2: 30 a.m. local time, according to a statement from 7th Fleet Public Affairs. The other ship involved in the collision is the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel ACX Crystal.
Aerial footage posted on a Japanese news site showed significant damage on the starboard side of the destroyer’s superstructure.
«The extent of the damage is being determined, » the statement read.
