Oft-troubled Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones was suspended by the NFL on Friday for one game for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Jones, who was banned for the entire 2007 season and part of the next season for a compilation of arrests and violations, will miss the Bengals’ first game on Sept. 10 against Baltimore unless he pursues an appeal.
In May, Jones pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from a January altercation outside a Cincinnati hotel in which he cursed at police and allegedly spit on a jail nurse while receiving treatment. Two other misdemeanor charges for assault and disorderly conduct were later dropped and Jones was sentenced to time already served (two days) for the guilty plea agreement on obstructing official court business.
The NFL released a statement addressing the 33-year-old Jones, saying that there was «extensive video documentation of the tone, tenor and nature of your interactions with law enforcement at the site of your arrest, during transportation to the jail, and during the booking process.
«As you acknowledged, your post-arrest words and actions reflected poorly on you and your family, the Cincinnati Bengals football club, and the NFL, » the statement continued. «While it is our understanding that appropriate apologies have been publicly extended, they do not completely negate your behavior and admission of culpability for the underlying conduct.»
Jones has three days to appeal the suspension.
«The Bengals anticipated this result and are glad to finally put the matter behind us, » a team statement read. «Our focus is on getting ready for the upcoming season. Adam will participate in training camp and we are counting on him to help our team when he returns from suspension.»
