A pitcher for the Las Vegas 51s has been placed on the disabled list following an alleged attack by a homeless man last Saturday.
SALT LAKE CITY — A relief pitcher for the Las Vegas 51s has been placed on the disabled list after police say he was attacked by a homeless man with a tire iron Saturday.
According to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court, Logan Taylor, who plays for the Triple-A minor league team, was walking on 500 South and West Temple in Salt Lake City when a homeless man carrying a tire iron and a sock full of rocks demanded Taylor’s wallet.
According to police, Taylor refused the demand and the man beat the baseball player across the head with the tire iron. Taylor was able to escape, and the attacker fled the scene.
Taylor received a laceration to the back of the head and during the attack. On Sunday, Taylor was placed on the disabled roster for seven days.
Police say Joshua Cruz, 33, was identified by a witness as the attacker.
Cruz was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated robbery, as well as a class A misdemeanor for failing to stop at the command of an officer.
The Las Vegas 51s, an affiliate of the New York Mets, were in Salt Lake City for a series against the Salt Lake Bees.
A spokesman for the team could not be reached regarding Taylor’s condition and recovery.
