One man was shot to death in a Roxbury courtyard, while another working as a clerk in a nearby convenience store narrowly dodged an errant bullet in the fusillade late Saturday night at a public housing complex.
An impromptu memorial consisting of a stuffed dog between two candles marked the still-bloodied spot yesterday where the man was killed between brick buildings and blue recycling containers at the Lenox Street apartments shortly after 10: 50 p.m. Saturday.
Boston police spokesman officer Stephen McNulty said the slain man was in his 20s.
His identity had not been released as of last night and no arrests were announced.
A distraught woman being consoled at the scene yesterday identified herself as a cousin of the victim, but declined comment through tears.
A Boston police cruiser was stationed at Kendall Street and Shawmut Avenue behind Jim Rice Field and the Ramsey Park playground throughout the day.
At the Shawmut Grocery, meanwhile, the shattered front window had a large bullet hole. A clerk told the Herald the bullet tore through a “Nigeria Direct” money transfer poster just a couple feet to his right as he worked at the counter Saturday night.
The clerk, who spoke on condition he not be identified, said yesterday, “I heard three shots, ” then demonstrated how he ducked and dove for cover under the counter.
“I work here. My heart is broken, ” he said of the terrifying incident.
The bullet passed between boxes of cod liver oil and cans of malt extract on a shelf, traveled along a wall where it broke three clear-plastic holders for scratch tickets and then winged a metal hook above boxes of Dutch Masters cigars, he said, walking the route.
The clerk said no one knows where the bullet ended up.
