“My son is a high-quality person and I applaud his transparency, ” Trump said in a statement, which was read to reporters by White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders during an off-camera briefing.
Sanders did not dispute stunning new emails disclosed by Trump Jr. Tuesday detailing efforts to set up the meeting. She referred all questions about the meeting to lawyers representing the president and his eldest son.
ADVERTISEMENT The spokeswoman did say, however, it’s “ridiculous” to suggest the meeting amounts to an act of treason by Trump Jr., as some critics of the president have alleged.
Sanders stood by her Monday claim that Trump Jr. did not collude with Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
She said she was not able to say the last time the president spoke with his son.
