The buggy was struck by a car that didn’t stop in time, police say.
EVERGREEN TWP, MI — A Snover couple in their 70s were thrown from a horsedrawn buggy late Friday afternoon when police say a car driver failed to brake in time and struck the buggy.
The passenger of the buggy, 73-year-old Ida Troyer, was airlifted from the crash scene to a Saginaw County hospital, said Sanilac County Undersheriff Brad Roff.
The buggy driver, 77-year-old Eli Troyer, along with the car driver, a 74-year-old Bad Axe woman, were both treated at the scene, Roff said.
The crash occurred around 4: 30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, on Germania Road near Robinson Road in Sanilac County’s Evergreen Township, the undersheriff said.
Police believe the Bad Axe woman was driving her 2016 Chevrolet Malibu southbound on Germania Road and didn’t see the buggy in front of her in time, Roff said. The woman attempted to brake, but it was too late.
The force of the impact threw the Troyers from the buggy and killed the horse that was hitched to the buggy, Roff said.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, but police aren’t releasing the Bad Axe woman’s name pending further investigation, he said.
The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Cass City Mobile Medical Response, Argyle Fire Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police, Bingham Emergency Medical Services and Sanilac Emergency Medical Services.
